Campursari pertama kali dipopulerkan oleh Manthous dengan memasukkan keyboard ke dalam orkestrasi gamelan pada sekitar akhir dekade 1980-an melalui kelompok gamelan "Maju Lancar". Kemudian secara pesat masuk unsur-unsur baru seperti langgam Jawa (keroncong) serta akhirnya dangdut. Pada dekade 2000-an telah dikenal bentuk-bentuk campursari yang merupakan campuran gamelan dan keroncong (misalnya Kena Goda dari Nurhana), campuran gamelan dan dangdut, serta campuran keroncong dan dangdut (congdut, populer dari lagu-lagu Didi Kempot).
