Rhoma Irama Revolusi Si Raja Dangdut

Rhoma Irama adalah seorang revolusioner dalam dunia musik Indonesia. Demikianlah komentar seorang sosiolog AS dalam tesisnya berjudul Rhoma Irama and the Dangdut Style: Aspect of Contemporary Indonesia Popular Culture, 1985. Komentar ini tidaklah berlebihan mengingat “Raja Dangdut” yang mencanangkan semboyan Voice of Moslem pada 13 Oktober 1973 ini menjadi agen pembaharu musik Melayu yang memadukan unsur musik rock dalam musik melayu serta melakukan improvisasi atas syair, lirik, kostum dan penampilan di atas panggung.

Pengalamannya menyanyikan lagu-lagu India sewaktu masih sekolah dasar, lagu-lagu pop dan rock Barat hingga akhir 1960-an lalu beralih ke musik Melayu, menjadikan lagu dan musik yang dibawakannya di atas panggung lebih dinamis, melodis dan menarik.

Kehidupannya tidak jauh dari terpaan gosip dan komentar pro dan kontra terhadap berbagai sikap yang diambilnya. Katakan saja, fenomena goyangan Inul yang dikecamnya dan dianggap tidak sesuai dengan nilai-nilai agama. Bahkan belum lama ini, sekitar bulan Mei 2003 lalu, ia digosipkan menjalin hubungan ‘istimewa’ dengan artis dangdut, Lely Angraeni (Angel). Menanggapi hal itu, Sang Raja Dangdut yang sudah puluhan tahun merajai belantara dunia artis tetap tenang memberikan penjelasan kepada masyarakat perihal gosip tersebut.

Pria ‘ningrat’ kelahiran Tasikmalaya, 11 Desember 1946 ini merupakan putra kedua dari empat belas bersaudara, delapan laki-laki dan enam perempuan (delapan saudara kandung, empat saudara seibu dan dua saudara bawaan dari ayah tirinya).
Ayahnya, Raden Burdah Anggawirya, seorang komandan gerilyawan Garuda Putih, memberinya nama ‘Irama’ karena bersimpati terhadap grup sandiwara Irama Baru asal Jakarta yang pernah diundangnya untuk menghibur pasukannya di Tasikmalaya. Sebelum pindah ke Tasikmalaya, keluarganya tinggal di Jakarta dan di kota inilah kakaknya, Haji Benny Muharam dilahirkan.

Setelah beberapa tahun tinggal di Tasikmalaya, keluarganya termasuk kakaknya, Haji Benny Muharam, dan adik-adiknya, Handi dan Ance, pindah lagi ke Jakarta lalu tinggal di Jalan Cicarawa, Bukit Duri, kemudian pindah ke Bukit Duri Tanjakan. Di sinilah mereka menghabiskan masa remaja sampai tahun 1971 lalu pindah lagi ke Tebet.

Semenjak kecil Rhoma sudah terlihat bakat seninya. Tangisannya terhenti setiap kali ibundanya, Tuti Juariah menyenandungkan lagu-lagu. Masuk kelas nol, ia sudah mulai menyukai lagu. Minatnya pada lagu semakin besar ketika masuk sekolah dasar. Menginjak kelas 2 SD, ia sudah bisa membawakan lagu-lagu Barat dan India dengan baik. Ia suka menyanyikan lagu No Other Love, kesayangan ibunya, dan lagu Mera Bilye Buchariajaya yang dinyanyikan oleh Lata Maagiskar. Selain itu, ia juga menikmati lagu-lagu Timur Tengah yang dinyanyikan Umm Kaltsum.

Bakat musiknya mungkin berasal dari ayahnya yang fasih memainkan seruling dan menyanyikan lagu-lagu Cianjuran, sebuah kesenian khas Sunda. Selain itu, pamannya yang bernama Arifin Ganda suka mengajarinya lagu-lagu Jepang ketika Rhoma masih kecil.

Karena usia Rhoma dengan kakaknya Benny tidak berbeda jauh, mereka selalu kompak dan pergi berdua-duaan. Berbeda dengan kakaknya yang lebih sering malas ikut mengaji di surau atau rumah kyai, Rhoma selalu mengikuti pengajian dengan tekun. Setiap kali ayah ibunya bertanya apakah kakaknya ikut mengaji, Rhoma selalu menjawab ya. Ke sekolahpun mereka berangkat bersama-sama. Dengan berboncengan sepeda, keduanya berangkat dan pulang ke sekolah di SD Kibono, Manggarai.

Di bangku SD, bakat menyanyi Rhoma semakin kelihatan. Rhoma adalah murid yang paling rajin bila disuruh maju ke depan kelas untuk menyanyi. Dan uniknya, Rhoma tidak sama dengan murid-murid lain yang suka malu-malu di depan kelas. Rhoma menyanyi dengan suara keras hingga terdengar sampai ke kelas-kelas lain. Perhatian murid-murid semakin besar karena Rhoma tidak menyanyikan lagu anak-anak atau lagu kebangsaan, melainkan lagu-lagu India.

Bakatnya sebagai penyanyi mendapat perhatian penyanyi senior, Bing Slamet karena melihat penampilan Rhoma yang mengesankan ketika menyanyikan sebuah lagu Barat dalam acara pesta di sekolahnya. Suatu hari ketika Rhoma masih duduk di kelas 4, Bing membawanya tampil dalam sebuah show di Gedung SBKA (Serikat Buruh Kereta Api) di Manggarai. Ini merupakan pengalaman yang membanggakan bagi Rhoma.

Sejak itu, meski belum berpikir untuk menjadi penyanyi, Rhoma sudah tidak terpisahkan lagi dari musik. Dengan usaha sendiri, ia belajar memainkan gitar hingga mahir. Karena saking tergila-gilanya dengan gitar, Rhoma sering membuat ibunya marah besar. Setiap kali ia pulang sekolah, yang pertama dia cari adalah gitar. Begitu pula setiap kali ia keluar rumah, gitar hampir selalu ia bawa.

Pernah suatu kali, ibunya menyuruh Rhoma menjaga adiknya, tetapi Rhoma lebih suka memilih bermain gitar. Akibat ulahnya itu, ibunya merampas gitarnya lalu melemparkannya ke arah pohon jambu hingga pecah. Kejadian itu membuat sedih Rhoma karena gitar adalah teman nomor satu baginya.

Dalam perkembangannya dalam mendalami musik, Rhoma mulai menyadari bahwa meskipun ayah dan ibunya - pasangan berdarah ningrat - adalah penggemar musik, mereka tetap menganggap dunia musik bukanlah sesuatu yang patut dibanggakan atau dijadikan sebuah profesi. Ibunya sering meneriakkan ‘berisik’ setiap kali ia menyanyi dan beranggapan bahwa musik akan menghambat sekolahnya. Kenyataan ini membuat bakat musik Rhoma justru semakin berkembang dari luar rumah karena di dalam rumah ia kurang mendapat dukungan.

Sewaktu Rhoma masih kelas 5 SD tahun 1958, ayahnya meninggal dunia. Sang ayah meninggalkan delapan anak, yaitu, Benny, Rhoma, Handi, Ance, Dedi, Eni, Herry, dan Yayang. Ketika kakaknya, Benny masih duduk di kelas 1 SMP, ibunya menikah lagi dengan seorang perwira ABRI, Raden Soma Wijaya, yang masih ada hubungan famili dan juga berdarah ningrat. Ayah tirinya ini membawa dua anak dari istrinya yang terdahulu dan setelah menikah dengan Ibu Rhoma, sang ibu melahirkan dua anak lagi.

Ketika ayah kandungnya masih hidup, suasana di rumahnya feodal. Sehari-hari ayah dan ibunya berbicara dengan bahasa Belanda. Segalanya harus serba teratur dan menggunakan tata krama tertentu. Para pembantu harus memanggil anak-anak dengan sebutan Den (raden). Anak-anak harus tidur siang dan makan bersama-sama. Ayahnya juga tak segan-segan menghukum mereka dengan pukulan jika dianggap melakukan kesalahan, misalnya bermain hujan atau membolos sekolah.

Keadaan keluarga Rhoma di Tebet waktu itu memang tergolong cukup kaya bila dibandingkan dengan masyarakat sekitar. Rumahnya mentereng dan mereka memiliki beberapa mobil seperti Impala, mobil yang tergolong mewah di zaman itu. Rhoma juga selalu berpakaian bagus dan mahal.

Namun, suasana feodal itu tidak lagi kental setelah ayah tiri-nya hadir di tengah-tengah keluarga mereka. Bahkan dari ayah tiri inilah, di samping pamannya, Rhoma mendapat 'angin' untuk menyalurkan bakat musiknya. Secara bertahap ayah tirinya membelikan alat-alat musik akustik berupa gitar, bongo, dan sebagainya.

Dunia Rhoma di masa kanak-kanak rupanya bukan hanya dunia musik. Rhoma juga suka adu jotos dengan anak-anak lain. Lingkungan pergaulannya ketika itu tergolong keras. Anak-anak saat itu cenderung mengelompok dalam geng, dan satu geng dengan geng lainnya saling bermusuhan, atau setidaknya saling bersaing. Dengan demikian, perkelahian antar geng sering tak terhindarkan.

Di Bukitduri tempat tinggalnya, hampir setiap kampung di daerah itu terdapat geng (kelompok anak muda). Di Bukitduri ada BBC (Bukit Duri Boys Club), di Kenari ada Kenari Boys, Cobra Boys, dan sebagainya. Dari Bukitduri Puteran, dan dari Manggarai banyak anak muda yang bergabung dengan Geng Cobra. Geng-geng ini saling bermusuhan sehingga keributan selalu hampir terjadi setiap kali mereka bertemu.

Satu hal yang cukup menonjol pada diri Rhoma adalah teman-temannya hampir selalu menjadikan Rhoma sebagai pemimpin. Tentu saja, bila gengnya bentrok dengan geng lain, Rhomalah yang diharapkan tampil paling depan, untuk berkelahi. Meskipun pernah menang beberapa kali, Rhoma juga sering mengalami babak belur, bahkan pernah luka cukup parah karena dikeroyok 15 anak di daerah Megaria.

Ketika ia masuk SMP, tempat-tempat berlatih silat semakin marak. Tetapi, bagi Rhoma, ilmu bela diri nasional ini tidaklah asing, karena sejak kecil ia sudah mendapat latihan dari ayahnya dan beberapa guru silat lainnya. Rhoma pernah belajar silat Cingkrik (paduan silat Betawi dan Cimande) pada Pak Rohimin di Kebun Jeruk, Jakarta Barat. Rhoma juga pernah belajar silat Sigundel di Jalan talang, selain beberapa ilmu silat yang lain. Bila terjadi perkelahian antar geng, para anggota geng saling menjajal ilmu silat yang telah mereka pelajari.

Karena kebandelannya itulah maka Rhoma beberapa kali harus tinggal kelas, sehingga karena malu maka ia acapkali berpindah sekolah. Kelas Tiga SMP dijalaninya di Medan. Ketika itu ia dititipkan di rumah pamannya. Tapi, tak berapa lama kemudian ia sudah pindah lagi ke SMP Negeri XV Jakarta.

Kenakalan Rhoma terus berlanjut hingga bangku SMA. Sewaktu bersekolah di SMA Negeri VIII Jakarta, ia pernah kabur dari kelas lewat jendela karena ingin bermain musik dengan teman-temannya yang sudah menunggunya di luar. Kegandrungannya pada musik dan berkelahi di luar dan dalam sekolah membuatnya acapkali keluar masuk sekolah SMA. Selain di SMA Negeri VIII Jakarta, ia juga pernah tercatat sebagai siswa di SMA PSKD Jakarta, St Joseph di Solo, dan akhirnya ia menetap di SMA 17 Agustus Tebet, Jakarta, tak jauh dari rumahnya.

Di masa SMA lah Rhoma sempat melewati masa-masa sangat pahit. Ia terpaksa menjadi pengamen di jalanan Kota Solo. Di sana dia ditampung di rumah seorang pengamen bernama Mas Gito. Sebenarnya, sebelum ‘terdampar’ di Solo, ia berniat hendak belajar agama di Pesantren Tebuireng Jombang. Namun, karena tidak membeli karcis, Rhoma, Benny kakaknya, dan tiga orang temannya, Daeng, Umar, dan Haris harus main kucing-kucingan dengan kondektur selama dalam perjalanan. Daripada terus gelisah karena takut ketahuan lalu diturunkan di tempat sepi, mereka akhirnya memilih turun di Stasiun Tugu Jogja. Dari Jogja, mereka naik kereta lagi menuju Solo.

Di Solo, Rhoma melanjutkan sekolahnya di SMA St. Joseph. Biaya sekolah diperolehnya dari mengamen dan menjual beberapa potong pakaian yang dibawanya dari Jakarta. Namun, karena di Solo sekolahnya tidak lulus, Rhoma harus pulang ke Jakarta dan melanjutkan sekolah di SMA 17 Agustus sampai akhirnya lulus tahun 1964. Ia kemudian melanjutkan kuliah di Fakultas Sosial Politik Universitas 17 Agustus, tapi hanya bertahan satu tahun karena ketertarikan Rhoma kepada dunia musik sudah terlampau besar.

Pada tahun tujuh puluhan, Rhoma sudah menjadi penyanyi dan musisi ternama setelah jatuh bangun dalam mendirikan band musik, mulai dari band Gayhand tahun 1963. Tak lama kemudian, ia pindah masuk Orkes Chandra Leka, sampai akhirnya membentuk band sendiri bernama Soneta yang sejak 13 Oktober 1973 mulai berkibar. Bersama grup Soneta yang dipimpinnya, Rhoma tercatat pernah memperoleh 11 Golden Record dari kaset-kasetnya.

Tahun 1972, ia menikahi Veronica yang kemudian memberinya tiga orang anak, Debby (31), Fikri (27) dan Romy (26). Tetapi sayang, Rhoma akhirnya bercerai dengan Veronica bulan Mei 1985 setelah sekitar setahun sebelumnya Rhoma menikahi Ricca Rachim - partner-nya dalam beberapa film seperti Melodi Cinta, Badai di Awal Bahagia, Camellia, Cinta Segitiga, Melodi Cinta, Pengabdian, Pengorbanan, dan Satria Bergitar. Hingga sekarang, Ricca tetap mendampingi Rhoma sebagai istri.

Kesuksesannya di dunia musik dan dunia seni peran membuat Rhoma sempat mendirikan perusahaan film Rhoma Irama Film Production yang berhasil memproduksi film, di antaranya Perjuangan dan Doa (1980) serta Cinta Kembar (1984).

Kini, Rhoma yang biasa dipanggil Pak Haji ini, banyak mengisi waktunya dengan berdakwah baik lewat musik maupun ceramah-ceramah di televisi hingga ke penjuru nusantara. Dengan semangat dan gaya khasnya, Rhoma yang menjadikan grup Soneta sebagai Sound of Moslem terus giat meluaskan syiar agama.
